Nordic Dual Subs is a browser extension made by Zexa (Stockholm, Sweden). It shows the subtitles of SVT Play, UR Play, NRK TV and DR TV together with a translation. We built it to need as little data as possible: there is no account, no advertising and no tracking.
What the extension sends, and to whom
| Data | Sent to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Subtitle lines of the programme you are watching | Google Translate (from your browser) | To translate them into the language you chose. |
| A fingerprint (hash) of each subtitle line, and the translations your browser received | Our server (zexa.se, hosted on Cloudflare) | So translations can be shared: when two viewers got the same translation of a line, the next viewer receives it instantly instead of translating again. The server does not store which programme a line belongs to. |
| Subtitle lines, only when Google is temporarily unavailable for you | Our server, which forwards them to DeepL | Backup translation. DeepL processes the text only to translate it. |
| Subtitle lines, only if you added your own DeepL API key | DeepL, directly from your browser, with your key | Translation on your own DeepL account. The key is stored only in your browser and is never sent to us. |
| A random install ID created on first use | Our server | To apply fair-use limits and keep the shared translations free of abuse. It is not linked to your name, email or Google account. |
| A word you click | Google Translate (from your browser) or our server as above | To show its meaning. The base form and dictionary gloss come from a dictionary inside the extension. |
| A screenshot of the video area, only when you ask it to read burned-in subtitles | Nowhere – processed on your computer | Text recognition runs inside the extension. |
What stays on your computer
Your settings, your saved words (with their sentences), and a cache of recent translations are stored in your browser only. Uninstalling the extension deletes them.
What our server keeps
- Translated lines keyed by a hash of the original line (not the original subtitle text).
- For each install: the random ID, a hash of its secret, when it was created, and the network prefix it came from (for example 192.0.2.0/24, not your full IP address) to limit abuse.
- Daily usage counters per install.
We do not sell or share this data, and we do not use it for advertising. Cloudflare processes requests on our behalf as our hosting provider.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what we hold about your install, or ask us to delete it. Because we don't know who you are, include your install ID (shown in the extension's settings) when you write to hello@zexa.se. You can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).
Changes
If this policy changes we update the date above; material changes are announced in the extension.
